The Bunker Hill Pipe Band started back in 1995 on a front stoop in Charlestown, Massachusetts. They wanted to remind younger people about the meaning of Irish American heritage and why we all came to this country. It’s more than just scally caps and shamrock tattoo’s for this band even if they hold the title of being the Misfits of Bagpipes. They are truly proud of being Irish American’s wearing the tartan of the U.S. Marine Corps along with a Boston Red Sox hat.

Beginning with five guys meeting in a church hall practicing on stolen bagpipes, they eventually grew to 23 members and are still growing. Along with marching in parades and attending piping competitions the band dedicates itself to charitable activities, pitching in on neighborhood projects and playing for vigils for young people killed due to violence and drugs. The Bunker Hill Pipe Band is also the official pipe band of the band The Dropkick Murphys while they tour New England. As important as the music and heritage is to this band their goal is really about bringing people from different sections of town who normally wouldn't talk to each other together and becoming friends.

I was lucky enough to come across the band when I offered my photography services for a bone marrow screening drive held in Charlestown for a young boy named Gage Dole. The members of the band gladly took me in as a little sister and I cannot thank them enough for the many opportunities and friendships they have provided for me. I am proud of them and the direction they are headed. These men have hearts of gold and are always there to lend a hand or their talent. I have witnessed this more than once and I am grateful for the brotherly love they have shown to important people in my world. These guys are more than just a pipe band that I photograph…they are my brothers in this extended family I’ve created. I love them all very much and there’s not much I wouldn’t do for them.
